A recent report in The Bulletin Magazine stated that overweight workers are costing Australia billions of dollars in lost productivity. An Australian study labelled the modern office as a “potentially hostile environment in terms of overweight and obesity”. The economic cost of obesity was estimated at $21 billion a year, including $1.7 billion in lost productivity.
Evidence is showing that overweight and unfit workers:
- have significantly more days off
- have higher risk of disability, such as lower back problems
- productivity while at work tends to be 15 to 20 % less than people who are not overweight
Although we hear the statistics on Australia’s battle with obesity repeatedly, it’s still shocking – almost 63% of women and more than 72% of men are overweight or obese.
